Liquefaction Potential - Seed's Method using SPT

The Liquefaction Resistance spreadsheet is set to evaluate liquefaction resistance of soils using field SPT N values. This calculation is based on Summary Report on Liquefaction potential evaluation, published in Journal of Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Engineering, October 2001 (can be accessed here).

Liquefaction potential evaluation methodology developed by Seed H.B and his colleagues has become the standard of practice among all practicing engineers in India. Indian standard, IS 1893 (Part 1): 2002 does not clearly specify the procedure to evaluate liquefaction (it notes: "Specialist literature may be referred for determining liquefaction potential of a site"). Explanatory example on Indian Seismic code IS 1893, released by IIT Kanpur under IITK-GSDMA project, uses Seed's method to evaluate the liquefaction potential.

This spreadsheet is based on the IITK guidelines document.

This methodology was developed using clean sands however Seed has give correction factor for sands with upto 35% fines. In case of silts and silt-clay mistures, not enough studies are made for an established method and hence this sheet can not be used in such cases.
